Doula Services

“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.”
-John H. Kennell, MD

What is a Doula?

Doulas provide non-medical support measures, such as emotional and physical support, movement, relaxation techniques, pain management, visualization techniques, and information to pregnant people. As a doula I offer continuous support and reassurance to you and your partner during labor; whether your labor is 2 hours or 32 hours.

Studies have shown that women who are cared for during labor by a birth doula are:

26% less likely to give birth by cesarean section.
41% less likely to give birth with vacuum extractor or forceps.
less likely to need for pitocin.
less likely to request pain medication and epidurals.
more likely to have shorter labors with fewer complications.
less likely to report negative feelings about their childbirth experience.

Long term benefits of labor support include:

Improved breastfeeding
Decreased postpartum depression
Better Mother-Infant Interaction

My Birth Doula Services

IMG_1055Childbirth is a powerful and transformative experience. As a birth doula I support families, partners, and individuals in all their childbirth choices. I serve people in hospitals, birth centers and home births. I offer continuous emotional and physical support, and companionship in order to empower people to have the birth experience of their choice.

During our initial meeting we will get to know each other and understand how we will work together. We will meet at a mutually convenient location and discuss your needs, concerns, questions and birthing options. This is an opportunity for you and your partner to ask me questions, get to know me and decide if I am the birth doula for you.

Depending on when I am hired, we will have one or two prenatal visits (each is approximately 1.5 – 2 hours in length) at your home or another location that is convenient for you. During the prenatal visit, I will provide guidance in the creation of a birth plan (or birth vision, as I like to call it), discuss your birthing preferences, and practice positions and relaxation techniques. We will discuss your fears, concerns and desires, and how I can best support you during childbirth.

You will have unlimited phone and e-mail contact with me throughout your pregnancy and postpartum period for questions. I will be on call for you 24 hours a day starting three weeks prior to your due date until your child’s birth. I will remain with you for at least one to two hours postpartum to assist with initiating breastfeeding and other early postpartum needs.

Our final meeting, the postpartum visit (approximately 1.5 - 2 hours in length), will take place within two weeks of your child’s birth. During this visit we will review your birth experience, and I will answer any questions you may have and provide appropriate resources and referrals.
